Abstract

In this study, the antibacterial effects of essential oils obtained from different Thymus species (Thymus sipyleus Boiss., Thymus leucostomus Hausskn. & Velen., Thymus pectinatus Fisch. & C.A. Mey., Thymus serpyllum L., Thymus vulgaris L.) collected from the natural vegetation of Divriği district in Sivas province were evaluated under in vitro conditions against certain plant pathogens (Xanthomonas euvesicatoria pv. euvesicatoria, Erwinia amylovora, and Pseudomonas syringae pv. lachrymans). Based on the results of the petri dish assays, the inhibition zones formed by different essential oil samples ranged from 5 to 40 mm for E. amylovora (Ea), 5 to 7 mm for P. syringae pv. lachrymans (Psl), and 5 to 44 mm for X. euvesicatoria pv. euvesicatoria (Xee). Furthermore, the antibacterial activities of certain essential oil samples, which exhibited strong inhibitory effects against X. euvesicatoria pv. euvesicatoria, were assessed in relation to time (0, 2, 4, 8, 12, 24, 48 hours) and application dose (7,8–500 µL mL-1). The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the Thymus essential oils against X. euvesicatoria pv. euvesicatoria were determined to range between 7,8 µL mL-1 and 31,25 µL mL-1. The findings suggest that Thymus essential oils have the potential to inhibit the growth of plant pathogenic bacteria at low concentrations.
