The Effects of Different Row Spacings on Yield Components of Common Buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench.) in İzmir-Bornova Conditions

Abstract

This study was carried out in 2022 in the experimental area of the Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture of Ege University, in İzmir-Bornova conditions to evaluate the effects of different row spacings on yield and yield components of buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench). Two buckwheat varieties (Aktaş and Güneş cv.) and two row spacings (20 cm and 40 cm) were used in the study. Plant height, number of main branches, thousand grain weight (BTA), number of grains per plant and grain yield were analyzed. The trial was established according to the split-plot trial design with three replications. According to the results, the cultivar effect was especially evident on the number of main branches and number of grains per plant; the greatest effect of the row spacings was observed on grain yield. Aktaş cultivar produced more grains, while Güneş cultivar produced more main branches. The highest grain yield (77.19 kg da⁻¹) was obtained in the 20 cm row spacing. Thousand grain weight was not influenced by either cultivar or row spacings. Broad sense heritability was found to be high for plant height (H² = 0.86), number of main branches (H² = 0.98) and number of grains per plant (H² = 0.97); while grain yield (H² = 0.42) and BTA (H² = 0.45) showed moderate heritability. Low yield was attributed to heat and drought stress due to late planting on 15 April; therefore, earlier planting and 20 cm row spacing are recommended.
