Determination of Agro-morphological Diversity in Different Origin Bread Wheat Genotypes Cultivated in Türkiye

Abstract

Plants can express their distinctive characteristics only when they grow in ideal environmental conditions. This study was conducted to determine the diversity of 34 bread wheat varieties originating from Türkiye, France, Croatia, Italy, Serbia, and Ukraine based on some phenological, morphological, and agronomic characteristics. The experiment was conducted in Manisa, which provides optimal conditions for wheat cultivation, during the 2021-2022 growing season. Differences among varieties were found to be statistically significant for all phenotypic traits examined. Among the varieties, the average data indicated flag leaf blade length of 20.5-31.3 cm, flag leaf blade width of 1.47-2.30 cm, flag leaf area of 23.4-48.9 cm2, flag leaf sheath length of 15.4-25.2 cm, length of neck above flag leaf sheath of 5.1-28.6 cm, plant height of 80.8-151.0 cm, culm diameter at the end of flag leaf sheath of 2.14-3.53 mm, length of neck above flag leaf sheath of 1.72-2.84 mm, days to heading of 106.3-128.0, fertile spike number per m2 of 408.3-730.3, biological yield of 1079.7-1791.7 kg da-1, grain yield of 336.0-850.3 kg da-1 and harvest index of 28.1-52.0%. It has been observed that the conditions under which varieties are registered are important in determining differences. When considering the influence of countries, it has been observed that varieties originating from European countries are generally compatible with varieties adapted to the natural rainfall conditions of Thrace and the irrigated conditions of Central Anatolia in Türkiye in terms of the characteristics examined.
