Abstract

In this study, the feasibility of using solar energy to meet energy consumption in animal shelters with high energy requirements under environmental conditions such as temperature, sunshine duration and precipitation in Tekirdağ province was investigated using the PVGIS program Photovoltaic (PV) systems were used to match the determined solar radiation values, demonstrating the feasibility of solar energy consumption in conditions. In the study, solar radiation values were determined monthly for all districts of an 18.4 x 31.6 x 4.25 m animal barn housing 40 head of beef cattle. The annual energy consumption in the barn was determined to be 140.040 kWh. Based on these values, solar radiation values were calculated for four different slopes (10o, 20o, 30o, and 40o) for the PV systems, and optimization was performed to determine the optimum slope. Based on the data obtained from the optimized slope angle and all four angles, it was determined that solar energy could be used to meet barn energy consumption in all districts of Tekirdağ. However, relative to the shelter's energy needs, Çerkezköy has 26%, Çorlu 30%, Ergene 27%, Hayrabolu 27%, Kapaklı 23%, Malkara 27%, Marmara Ereğlisi 29%, Muratlı 26%, Saray 26%, Süleymanpaşa 25%, and Şarköy 30% more solar energy potential. Furthermore, cost analysis results indicated that PV systems designed for the shelter would offset the initial investment cost in approximately five years. In this respect, the research can be considered a guide for new projects for animal shelters, future planning by public institutions and organizations, and animal shelter operations.
