Among legumes, common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is the species with the widest cultivation and consumption area and the greatest diversity worldwide. In recent years, determining the diversity of local genotypes in terms of their biochemical and other components has gained importance due to the effects associated with fibers, polyphenols, and other health-related compounds found in beans. In this context, the present study included 101 genotypes, consisting of commercial varieties obtained from different locations in Turkey and various regions of the world. Within the scope of the study, the chlorophyll content, total phenolic content, and antioxidant activities of the bean genotypes were determined. A high level of variation was observed among the genotypes for the examined traits, and genotypes that could serve as parents in different bean breeding programs were identified. When the data were evaluated, it was determined that the four genotypes with high chlorophyll content ranged from 12.58 mg 100 g⁻¹ to 16.37 mg 100 g⁻¹. For the 14 genotypes with high total phenolic content and antioxidant activity, the total phenolic content ranged from 64.71 mg GAE 100 g⁻¹ fresh weight (FW) to 82.68 mg GAE 100 g⁻¹ FW, while antioxidant activity ranged from 3.77 µmol TE g⁻¹ FW to 6.41 µmol TE g⁻¹ FW. Based on all the data, genotypes numbered 22, 72, 97, 98, and 100 were identified as potential parents for use in future bean breeding programs.
