Abstract
Maize is a globally important crop, with its productivity increasingly threatened by leafhopper species (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), which cause direct feeding damage and transmit plant pathogens. This study represents the first comprehensive investigation of leafhopper fauna and the population dynamics of dominant species in maize fields of Bolu province, Türkiye. Surveys were conducted across 34 fields in Merkez and Karacasu areas during the 2024 and 2025 growing seasons using sweep-netting, aspirators, and yellow sticky traps. A total of six species belonging to Typhlocybinae and Deltocephalinae subfamilies were identified. Zyginidia sohrab (Zachvatkin) was predominant, whereas Psammotettix striatus (Linnaeus) occurred at moderate levels, and P. alienus (Dahlbom), Empoasca decipiens (Paoli), Macrosteles laevis (Ribaut), and Euscelis incisus (Kirschbaum) were detected only sporadically. Given its dominance, the population dynamics of Z. sohrab were monitored in two selected maize fields. In both years, the species exhibited a single major seasonal peak, with population development starting in early June and reaching maximum levels between mid-July and early August. These population peaks were closely aligned with the reproductive stages of the maize plants. The population density declined toward late August or early September depending on the location and year. The findings of this research could guide future research on the population dynamics of Z. sohrab in relatively cool climate regions.
