Abstract

This study aimed to characterize seven lines obtained from crosses among eight bread wheat cultivars originating from Türkiye, Italy, and Ukraine, and to compare them with the parental cultivars in terms of the traits examined. The experiment was conducted in Yozgat during the 2023-2024 growing season using a randomized block design with three replications. The average data indicated that days to heading of 108.3-121.7 days, plant height of 79.2-116.6 cm, flag leaf blade width of 1.28-1.59 cm, flag leaf blade length of 10.8-19.4 cm, flag leaf blade area of 10.95-21.97 cm2, flag leaf sheath length of 16.9-22.7 cm, length of neck above flag leaf sheath of 11.8-23.9 cm, fertile spike number per m2 of 323.3-573.3, spike length of 7.7-11.5 cm, number of spikelets per spike of 18.0-22.5, awn length of 5.6-9.3 cm, spike density of 19.7-25.8 spikelets 10 cm-1, number of grain per spike of 30.0-54.5, grain yield of per spike of 1.21-2.20 g, grain yield of 344.5-547.0 kg da-1, harvest index of 30.2-37.9%, 1000 kernel weight of 31.9-44.7 g, test weight of 78.5-82.2 kg, protein content of 15.0-18.6%. Bread wheat lines outperformed the average of the parent cultivars (388.1 kg da-1) with an average grain yield of 457.3 kg da-1. In terms of grain yield, Bayraktar 2000 and Zlatoglava were identified as the genotypes with the highest values among parent cultivars, while Line-1, Line-2, Line-4, and Line-7 were identified as the genotypes with the highest values among lines. The results indicate that the bread wheat lines used in this study are promising. Therefore, conducting trials across different ecologies and a greater number of locations will provide valuable information on genotype performance and genotype × environment interactions.
