Common Weeds in Vegetable Production in Siirt Province of Turkey

Abstract

Since vegetables can be consumed fresh. Therefore they should not be mixed with poisonous weeds and should not contain pesticide residues. Thus, the determination of weeds in vegetable fields is of great importance in terms of both human health and weed control. Vegetable production areas in Siirt province of Turkey are constantly increasing due to the favorable climatic conditions. However, no previous study has been carried out to detect the weeds in vegetable crops in the region. Therefore it is aimed to determine the problematic weed species, their incidence and density in vegetable cultivation areas in Siirt province of Turkey. Surveys were carried out in a total of 40 fields. A total of 52 weed species belonging to 20 different families were determined in the study area. It was determined that 3 species among the identified weeds were parasitic, and 11 were belonging to the poaceae family, while the others were broad-leaved weed species. Sorghum halepense (67.5%), Echinocloa crus-galli (22.50%) and Cynodon dactylon (17.5%) were the most common and most dense species among the poaceae species. However the most common dicotyledoneae species with higher incidence in vegetable crops were determined as Portulaca oleracea (92.0%), Amaranthus retroflexus (82.0%), Chrozophora tinctoria (82.0%), Alhagi pseudalhagi (77.0%), Solanum nigrum (72.0%), Heliotropium europaeum (70% 0), Amaranthus albus (67.0%), Xanthium strumarium (65.0%) and Convolvulus arvensis (57.5%).
